The solar eclipse, on April 8th, will be visible across the 124 mile band that crosses to the west and north side of Cincinnati.  This is the first time in 200 years that that the eclipse’s path is in our area. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the people in Greater Cincinnati will experience a partial totality (99.7% obscuration) at 3:09pm that day. Those of us in Clermont County will need to travel North or West to see the total eclipse.

• Cincinnati.com reports that special eclipse viewing glasses are necessary to filter out the harmful ultraviolet and infrared light from the sun. Eclipse glasses can be purchased at many stores or can be ordered online. The eclipse can also be viewed through telescopes, binoculars and cameras with solar filters and pinhole or similar projection methods.
• The American Astronomical Society has compiled a list of reputable vendors selling compliant glasses or hand-held viewers, including Kroger, Wal-Mart Stores, REI, Lowe’s and Best Buy.
• Clermont County Library–  We will be passing out free eclipse glasses March 23 at each branch. Watch our social media pages and website for more details. We will pass out glasses as long as our limited supply lasts. Register for one of our eight eclipse programs across the system. When you visit, stop by one of our displays and check out a book about the sun and moon and what makes an eclipse so special.
